Ammunition Sales and Transfers
What do I need to do to buy ammunition in California?
- All ammunition purchases require a background check. Choose which statement best fits your situation:
- I have purchased a firearm or had a firearm registered in my name within the last five years.
- My address is the same as when I purchased my firearm.
- You should be eligible for the Standard Background Check.
- It costs $1 and the approval should be immediate.
- My address has changed since I last purchased a firearm.
- You must update your address in the California Firearm Application Reporting System (CFARS) before you are eligible for the Standard Background Check.
- I have not purchased a firearm or had a firearm registered in my name within the last five years.
- If you are a California resident, you may purchase ammunition using the Basic Background Check.
- It costs $19. You must wait until DOJ approves the background check before you may take your ammunition with you. It may take 20 minutes. It may take 2 weeks. We will notify you once DOJ has given us a determination of your background check status.
- You must bring a valid California Real ID (golden bear stamped in the top right corner of the ID)
- What if my driver license says “Federal Limits Apply”?
- You must also provide a certified copy of your birth certificate or a valid U.S. passport before the firearm is released to you.
- If your current legal name does not match the birth certificate, you must also bring a proof of your legal name change (i.e. marriage certificate, divorce decree, court order, etc.)
Can I buy ammunition online and have it transferred to On Target?
- Yes. You must fill out a Contract to Transfer Ammunition in-person at On Target BEFORE the ammunition arrives. We will need a copy of the invoice stating the amount you paid for the ammunition.
How much does it cost to transfer ammunition to On Target?
- 0-30lbs: $25
- 31-6lbs: $35
- 61-90lbs: $50
- 91-120lbs: $75
- 121lbs+: Ask for a quote
- You are required to pay the CA sales tax at On Target if the invoice does not prove that you have already paid the CA sales tax.
- Members receive a $15 discount on all ammo transfer fees.
- Additional $25 processing fee for all ammunition transfers if the Contract to Transfer Ammunition is not filled out BEFORE the firearm arrive
