How to Obtain Your Hunting License in California
If you’re looking to legally hunt in California and you do not currently have a valid hunting license from another State, or you have never had a hunting license, then you must complete the required education and licensing process. Follow these steps to ensure you meet all the requirements:
Step 1: Complete the California Hunter Education Course Online
Before you can attend the required in-person class and obtain your hunting license, you must complete an online Hunter Education Course approved by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW).
- Visit the official online course at Hunter-Ed California.
- Register for an account and complete the online course modules.
- Pass the final exam to receive a Hunter Education Certificate of Completion.
This online course covers essential hunting laws, firearm safety, wildlife conservation, and ethical hunting practices.
Step 2: Create or Log Into Your On-Target User
After completing the online course, you must register for the required in-person follow-up class at On-Target.

Visit the On-Target Hunter Ed Class where in-person classes are scheduled.

Select a class that fits your schedule and register using your Hunter Education Certificate as proof of completion of the online course.
Step 3: Attend the In-Person Hunter Education Class at On-Target – 4 hour class
This class is a state-mandated requirement to finalize your certification.

The class typically includes safety demonstrations, and a review of California hunting regulations.

Be prepared to take a multiple choice, true/false test based on the online materials and the instruction from the in-person classroom discussions.

Upon successful completion, you will receive your official California Hunter Education Certificate, which is necessary for purchasing a hunting license.
Step 4: Obtain Your Hunting License
With your Hunter Education Certificate, you can now purchase your hunting license through the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

- In-Person: Visit a licensed vendor such as a sporting goods store, Walmart, or a CDFW office.
